With Atlanta moving the Winnipeg, the NHL will need a realignment. The league could do it via a minor realignment or they could take the opportunity to change big and for the better. The realignment is simple. Keep the East and Western conferences and split each up into 2 divisions, one with 7 team and the other with 8.

The in West, the Pacific division would consist of the Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Colorado, San Jose, L.A., Anaheim and Phoenix. The Central division would consist of Columbus, Winnipeg, Minnesota, Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville and Dallas.

In the East, the Atlantic division would be Montreal, Ottowa, Torono, Buffalo, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The South would be Boston, both New York teams, New Jersey, Washington, Caroline, Tampa Bay and Florida.

It seems strange to leave Chicago as the only original 6 team in the West but without Detroit it might give the other teams a chance to gain popularity in the west. The playoffs could also be changed to have a division series in the first two rounds, a conference round and finally the Stanley Cup finals. To create some diversity over the years, the second round could be a conference semi-finals with the 4 division winners being re-seeded 1 through 4.

The overall result is a much better product with a return to divisional playoffs and historical rivalries, while allowing new rivalries to build in the west without Detroit taking the spotlight.
